#1 Reason People in US Use Acupuncture? Back Pain

Back pain affects up to 80% of the population and can become chronic.  It can be a large factor in decreased quality of life, disability or inability to perform job functions, and depression.

Acupuncture helps in much the same way it helps sciatica and sports injuries (see our previous blogs); by reducing pain and inflammation, improving blood circulation to the back, and relaxing spasms.

The research is extensive.  Some highlighted studies include the following findings:

  • In adults 60 years and older with low back pain for 3 or more months, results of a randomized controlled trial showed the acupuncture group had a significant reduction in disability which was maintained for up to 4 weeks after treatment.  Full Article Click Here: meng.backpain
  • A meta-analysis of research for acupuncture and back pain reviewed 12 studies and found that acupuncture “was superior to various control interventions” in improving patient symptoms.  Full Article Click Here: Ernst.LBP
  • A 2008 systematic review of 23 trials found “moderate evidence that acupuncture is more effective than no treatment, and…strong evidence that acupuncture can be a useful supplement to other forms of conventional therapy…” acupuncture-for-LBP-review_yuan)
  • Acupuncture may be effective in treating pregnancy related low back pain, and superior to conventional treatment alone.  Full Article Click Here: acu.back_.pregnancy
