Self-Care Tips

  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss daily
  • Have teeth professionally cleaned twice a year
  • Avoid hot or cold foods (use sensitive toothpaste)
  • Bite cotton ball soaked in oil of clove (found at most drug stores)

How Chinese Medicine Can Help:

  • TMJ: a meta-analysis of 4 randomized controlled trials treating TMJ with acupuncture showed those that received acupuncture had a reduction in pain, improved jaw function and increased mouth opening.  Acupuncture was found to be more effective than placebo in reducing TMJ pain. Having acupuncture prior to a dental procedure was shown to effectively reduce anxiety in a randomized controlled trial. 182 patients received ear acupuncture prior to a dental procedure and results were compared to a control group.
