The Effects of Acupuncture on Chronic Knee Pain Due to Osteoarthritis

Chronic knee pain is a common symptom experienced among people over fifty years of getty_rm_photo_of_acupuncture_in_kneeage. It can restrict daily activities such as walking and running, and lower the quality of life. Osteoarthritis of the knee occurs as the cartilage in the knee joint begins to wear and tear. When the cartilage wears, the protective space between the bones decreases resulting in the bone rubbing against the bone. Osteoarthritis is the major cause of knee pain, stiffness, and physical disability.

The results of the meta-analysis is that acupuncture has shown superior pain improvement and physical function in the short term, or up to 13 weeks. In the long term, or up to 26 weeks, acupuncture has shown superior physical function.
