IVF & Acupuncture: What the Research Really Shows

At Wildwood Acupuncture Center, we specialize in supporting fertility through evidence-based acupuncture. For patients undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF), acupuncture has become a widely used and trusted therapy—and now, research is catching up with what many have experienced firsthand.

A growing body of clinical evidence shows that acupuncture can improve IVF success rates, especially when it’s integrated strategically throughout the IVF cycle.

Acupuncture Increases IVF Success Rates

A major review of nine high-quality clinical trials—including nearly 2,000 women—found that acupuncture increased the rate of live births by 30% when compared to no treatment. And for women who had previously undergone an unsuccessful IVF cycle, that benefit increased to 42% in live birth rates when acupuncture was added.

Other key findings from recent analyses include:

  • Clinical pregnancy rates (CPR) increased by 28–32%
  • Ongoing pregnancy rates (beyond 12 weeks) improved by 42%
  • No increase in miscarriage risk when acupuncture was used

These outcomes show that acupuncture can be a powerful complement to IVF, particularly for those who want to maximize their chances of a successful outcome.

Why Does Acupuncture Work for IVF?

Current evidence suggests acupuncture supports fertility in several important ways:

  • Enhances blood flow to the uterus and ovaries
  • Regulates reproductive hormones through the brain–ovary axis
  • Reduces stress and anxiety, which are known to affect IVF outcomes
  • Supports ovulation and menstrual cycle regularity
  • May improve insulin and glucose metabolism in women with PCOS

Together, these effects help create a more receptive uterine environment and support healthy embryo implantation.

Especially Beneficial for Those with Past IVF Failures

One of the most striking findings from the research is how effective acupuncture can be for patients who’ve experienced failed IVF cycles in the past.

  • Clinical pregnancy rates increased by 60%
  • Live birth rates increased by 42%

For these patients, acupuncture may offer renewed hope and a more supportive approach to achieving a successful pregnancy.

Acupuncture for the Mind–Body Connection

Beyond the physical benefits, acupuncture is known to help reduce the emotional burden of IVF. While this aspect wasn’t the focus of recent trials, previous research and clinical experience consistently show that acupuncture:

  • Helps patients feel more balanced, calm, and supported
  • Can reduce treatment-related anxiety and depression
  • May improve treatment adherence by decreasing stress-related dropouts

This holistic benefit is something many of our patients value just as much as the physical outcomes.
