Acupuncture to Support IUI

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a common fertility treatment that is less invasive and generally less expensive than in vitro fertilization (IVF). If you’re preparing for IUI, you may be wondering how acupuncture can support your fertility journey and when to begin treatment. Ideally, acupuncture should begin 1 to 3 months before IUI. For centuries, acupuncture has been used to support women’s reproductive health, regulate menstrual cycles, promote blood circulation to the uterus and ovaries, support hormonal balance, and relieve stress. Women with conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), irregular menstrual cycles, or hormonal imbalances should work with their fertility specialist and acupuncturist to develop a personalized treatment plan. Even if your IUI cycle has already begun, you can still consult your healthcare team to determine whether acupuncture is appropriate for you.

Why Use Acupuncture During IUI?

Acupuncture has been used for centuries to help women regulate their menstrual cycles, promote ovulation, and support natural fertility. If you’ve tried to conceive without success and are now considering IUI, acupuncture may be a helpful addition to your fertility journey.

Research suggests that acupuncture may help prepare the body for IUI. It may promote blood flow to the uterus, support uterine function, and help reduce uterine contractions. Improved uterine circulation may also support a healthy endometrium, which plays an important role in preparing for pregnancy.

Hormonal balance is equally important, whether you’re trying to conceive naturally or through IUI. Healthy hormone levels play a vital role in supporting pregnancy. Research has explored acupuncture’s effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis and its potential role in stress regulation. If you’re trying to conceive, you know how stressful the process can be. Managing stress is an important part of caring for your overall well-being during fertility treatment.

Overall, acupuncture may support the body in several ways as you prepare for pregnancy.

Unlike IVF, where fertilization takes place in a laboratory, IUI involves placing prepared sperm directly into the uterus around ovulation. Women undergoing IUI should schedule acupuncture sessions before and after the procedure to help promote relaxation and support their overall well-being throughout the fertility journey. Regular acupuncture sessions can provide an opportunity to focus on self-care during treatment.

Acupuncture may also help relieve certain pregnancy-related symptoms when provided by a qualified practitioner experienced in pregnancy care.

Every fertility journey is unique. Work closely with your fertility specialist and acupuncturist to develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs.
